So far, all I've done is put the replacement rod on. It doesn't take that much force to shift; all I can think is that the previous owner had stomped on the shift lever, either trying to find neutral or when the bike was laid down on its left side. (Maybe s/he forgot which side the rear brake was on in a panic stop?)
